“Welcome to the website for the Society for Historians of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era! This website resulted from recognition within the Society that we needed a more effective way to serve our members and to communicate the rich history of the United States from Reconstruction to the end of World War One. Research, writing, and teaching on the history of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era are expanding our knowledge of this crucial historical period in exciting ways. Historians are changing our understanding of those crucial decades by bringing new ideas, questions, and methodologies to their work. Innovative approaches that link digital technologies to the humanities are blooming as well and, as a result, the number of terrific resources that exist for teaching and studying the Gilded Age and Progressive Era has rapidly expanded. Increasingly we at SHGAPE knew that the work we do building and expanding a community of people working on the history of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era required a website more fully equipped to share this intellectual ferment.
SHGAPE’s website developed from the labors and design creativity of Christopher McKnight Nichols, SHGAPE’s Web Editor, an excellent design team at Imaginaurium Design, and SHGAPE website and online outreach committee members Robert McGreevey and Nicole Phelps. We are very grateful to the committee members–especially Chris Nichols–for their innovative leadership on this project. On behalf of them and the other officers of SHGAPE, I invite you to explore the site and the many resources compiled here. You’ll find information about SHGAPE activities and news, the Journal of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era, professional opportunities, multimedia resources, and more. I especially enjoy the vivid cartoons and film clips on the site, as well as the historians’ twitter feed. What will be your favorites? Let us know! We welcome your thoughts and feedback on the website; they will help us as we refine and build our online capacities in the months to come.”
